almost exactly the same place her
youngest daughter Valerie was killed in
similar circumstances An elderly woman has been knocked over
and killed on the same road where her
daughter died almost 29 years ago. Eighty-year-old Shirley Masson was hit by a
car on the A96 at Alves Woods, between
Forres and Elgin in Moray, at around
5.45pm yesterday. Tragically, her youngest daughter Valerie
died in similar circumstances in the same
spot 29 years ago, when she was aged just
14. Mrs Masson died at the scene of the
collision yesterday. The driver of the black Vauxhall Vectra car
involved in the crash was unhurt. Mrs Masson's son Scott paid tribute to his
mother, saying what had happened was
"tragic beyond belief". He said: "It is tragic beyond belief that this
has happened and we are all absolutely
devastated. It is made all the more poignant
that her daughter died there too. "She was a very family orientated person
and was very caring, she always wanted to
do something for everybody. She was very
much a home bird and was loved by all her
family, friends and neighbours. "Mum enjoyed gardening and she had a
very active mind. She was a long-time
volunteer with the Citizen's Advice Bureau,
she had received her Gold Blood Donor
card and was an active volunteer for the
service. She was also a keen bridge player. Mum enjoyed her weekly keep-fit class and
catching up with friends. "She was a wonderful mother and
grandmother who was very much loved by
us all. She will be greatly missed by family,
friends and neighbours. Messages of
sympathy and support have been
overwhelming." Officers are continuing to investigate the
circumstances of the crash and are
appealing for any witnesses to contact them. They are particularly keen to speak to the
driver of a car travelling on the A96 towards
Elgin at the time of the crash and may have
had to swerve to avoid a heavily breaking
car.
