Azim Azam: Teenager stabbed to death on his first day of college after getting off bus
Azim was still conscious when paramedics found him 20 yards away but died shortly after arriving at hospital.
A young student was stabbed to death in front of his friends moments after getting off a bus yesterday.
Azim Azam, 16, was on his way to his first day at college when he got into a row with another teenage passenger.
Witnesses said the dispute continued as the pair got off and he was stabbed in the chest at the bus stop.
Azim was still conscious when paramedics found him 20 yards away but died shortly after arriving at hospital.
One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: “I saw a man stumbling up the road. He was trying to shout but he didn’t have much breath.
“He collapsed and the ambulance was there minutes later. I could see blood — it looked like he’d been stabbed in the chest.
“He managed to walk about 20 yards but then collapsed and I didn’t see much movement from him after that.
"I didn’t want to get too close because I didn’t want to see what was happening. It was horrible.”
Mum-of-two Fatima Hassan, 44, said: “I saw a man lying on the ambulance stretcher. Another person was holding a drip.
“A man told me he’d seen blood coming from the victim’s nose and he looked dizzy.
“The man asked the victim, ‘Are you OK?’ and he said, ‘No, I’ve been stabbed’ and showed him where by lifting his clothes.”
Clive Wilson, 54, said: “It was about8.30am. I went for a run and was coming home and saw a chap lying on the road.
"I saw his legs weren’t moving. There was a crowd around him, people trying to help.”
The stabbing happened just seconds after the teenager, of Billesley, Birmingham, got off a No2 bus in the city’s Moseley area.
Pal Mick Southall said: “I’ve not stopped crying all day.
"My friend was on the same bus as him and phoned me to say he’d had an argument with someone.
"She didn’t know what happened but said Azim was getting off the bus with this bloke.
“I can’t believe it, he was a lovely bloke, would do anything for anyone.
"It’s unbelievable anyone would be carrying a knife on a bus at that time of day.”
Mitchell Smith, 18, added: “He was a lovely person, just so much love in his heart. He was just off for his first proper day at college and then this.
“I can’t believe it. It’s just not right. He was in the odd bit of trouble, but nothing that deserves this.”
Det Supt Mark Payne, of West Midlands Police, said: “The killer is at large and no weapon has been found.
"At 8.33am there was an altercation. We think the two would have been just coming off the No2 bus.
“They appear to have been known to each other, so I want to reassure people that there is not a man going round randomly stabbing people on the buses.
“The victim has received fatal stab wounds, at least one, to the body. We believe he was on his way to college at the time he was attacked.
“Witnesses who have come forward have given us evidence that the two were at least associates. This is not a random attack.”
Det Chief Supt Simon Wallis appealed for passengers on the bus to come forward with information.
He added: “We are working hard to understand the precise circumstances surrounding the attack.”
Police said Azim’s family had been informed of his death and that a postmortem examination will take place this week.
The murder scene was cordoned off and detectives were investigating CCTV footage which may have captured the stabbing.
Azim was on his way to Bournville College, which said: “We can confirm a young man due to commence college has sadly been involved in a fatal incident.”
Sixteen-year-old Christina Edkins was stabbed to death on the top deck of a bus in Birmingham on March 7.
Philip Simelane, 22, was charged with the teenager’s murder and is awaiting trial.
