Hanging on to life without eyes, nose...
• Man seeks N3m assistance for plastic surgery after electrocution, which left two others dead
LIFE has been hard and harsh on Oguntade Adeseyi, 27-year-old indigene of Ibadan, Oyo State. Through no fault of his, he could not complete his secondary education and despite his struggle to break the poverty cycle through hardwork, Adeseyi has found himself in another misfortune.
The young man, who had learnt tailoring in Ibadan, like every ambitious young man, relocated to Lagos State to eke out a living. After settling in Lagos, he became a commercial truck driver to sustain himself and support his wife and son he left behind in Ibadan.
Things had begun to shape up and look good until fate dealt Adeseyi another blow. A high-tension cable fell on him and two other neighbours outside their home at Ikeja one evening. He is, however, lucky to be alive, as the incident had killed his two neighbours.
The electrocution has left the truck driver in a very bad shape, scrapping off his eyes, nose, ears and a section of his head. After several months of undergoing treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), attempts at reducing the severity of his ‘monster face’ and burns have yielded little success.
According to Adeseyi’s father, Oguntade Remi, some sensory organs of the now grisly-looking young man have been badly affected by the electrocution that occurred at Adeseyi’s paternal aunty house, where he has been squatting since his arrival in Lagos.
Though happy that his son is lucky to be alive, Remi is still in shock at the state of Adeseyi, who is desperately hanging on to life at LUTH. “I don’t know whether to say his condition is worse than being alive. He has lost both eyes, his nose, ears and mouth badly burnt beyond repair, including part of his head. It is a gruesome sight to behold.
“His wife, on sighting him, fainted and it was by God’s grace that she was immediately revived. Other relatives, who had been paying visits, could not bear to catch a glimpse of Seyi in his present state.
“The painful thing is that not even my sister or neighbours could explain what went wrong or how the accident that destroyed my son’s face and killed two others happened. All they recall they found the lifeless bodies of the young men in the gutter in front of the house the next morning,” he said.
Doctors and consultants attending to Adeseyi have advised facial plastic surgery as the only means of remedying the situation and giving him another shot at life without being a scarecrow. This excludes replacement of the badly damaged sensory organs.
The surgery and post-surgical treatment would cost about N3 million, which is a tall order for the Oguntade family. Remi said his entire savings had been spent on Adeseyi’s daily treatment and he seeks financial assistance from the public.
