Sweethearts ... teenagers Mert Karaoglan and Charleigh Disbrey
TWO school sweethearts were killed when a train ploughed into them in what is believed to have been a suicide pact.
Charleigh Disbrey — who had just turned 15 and dreamed of becoming a singer — died along with her boyfriend Mert Karaoglan, 18.
Their bodies were found side by side after the passenger train — empty apart from two drivers in the cab — slammed into them 200 yards from a station.
At least one suicide note is believed to have been left at the horror scene — and yesterday a friend hinted that the schoolgirl nicknamed CJ had been troubled.
In a tribute on Twitter the girl wrote: “CJ got what she wanted & we need to respect her choices. She didn’t live a happy life and she’s finally happy now.”
The tweet was later deleted. It also emerged that last month Charleigh, whose parents had separated, posted on the site: “Don’t get too close, it’s dark inside — it’s where my demons hide...”
Last night the baffled and grief-stricken father of her boyfriend, who came from a Turkish family, sobbed: “He was a happy person — everything seemed OK.” Distraught Sakru, 48, told how his son was watching TV in Borehamwood, Herts, when he announced he was “going out for one or two hours”.
The dad wept: “We told him not to be out late. We were waiting and waiting. Then the police came round to see us at nine this morning. I can’t stop crying.”
The train — travelling from St Albans, Herts, to London — smashed into the pair just north of Elstree and Borehamwood station. Operators First Capital Connect described the horror at 8.55pm on Monday — which sparked massive disruption on the Midland Mainline — as “shocking”.
Its two shattered drivers were being offered counselling.
Rail chiefs shut the line for more than two hours as paramedics and cops sealed off the scene.
Yesterday tearful pupils at Hertswood Academy — the local school which both victims went to — were also offered counselling. Head Peter Gillett said: “We are devastated.
“Both students were talented, hard-working and well-respected.”
Videos posted on the web show schoolgirl CJ — who applied to go on Britain’s Got Talent — singing and playing her beloved guitar. Her mum even made her a guitar-shaped cake for her 15th birthday last Friday. The youngster used the internet to proclaim: “Music is my life, my passion, my dream and just my everything. I just want a shot to be who I know I can be.”
She added: “I want to change the world with my music. I am very determined! I never, ever give up.”
But she also revealed how she was invited to a pre-audition for BGT — but spurned the chance.
Charleigh had appeared upbeat in recent weeks, posting: “Loving life at the moment!”
Just five days ago she used her Twitter page — under the name “Insanity’s Mother” — to tell Mert: “Love my hunny bunny.”
He was studying media, photography and business and planned to go to Hertfordshire University to study visual effects. His ambition was to become a filmmaker.
Yesterday flowers were left at the school. Others placed near the rail line from Charleigh’s family bore a note describing her as “beautiful” and adding: “You will always be in our hearts forever.”
