Hospital workers through wedding for a terminally ill

Evonne Lee, 52, was diagnosed with cancer last year and this February she learned she had leukemia and her condition was terminal. Inspired by the woman's strength and hopeful spirit, the hospital staff planned her wedding to long-time boyfriend Don Tyler on Tuesday at the University of Louisville Hospital Love: Gazing longingly at her beloved, Evonne Lee was married at the University of Louisville Hospital on Tuesday Support: Though she was too weak to walk down the aisle, she was wheeled into the hospital chapel to her waiting groom Tyler and Lee have dated eight years and she said that she knew when they met that they would be together for life. After she received her cancer diagnosis last August, Tyler remained by her side and he proposed to her on Christmas Day in 2012. 'That's when Jesus Christ was born and that's when we want to celebrate our joining together,' he told WAVE-TV news. This February, when Lee received the heart breaking news about her condition, the staff at the hospital decided to make her dream come true and plan her wedding. 'No one really knows what day their time is up on Earth. I'm just living one day to the next,' Lee told the local news station. After-party: The staff transformed her hospital room into a reception hall and guests enjoyed snacks provided by local businesses Inspirational: Nurse Melissa Pritchett (left) helped organize the event and mobilized the staff and local businesses to get involved. The nurses taped a Just Married sign to Evonne's wheelchair 'We knew we were working against the clock, so a lot of the staff started bringing in all these wedding magazines,' University Hospital Nurse Melissa Pritchett told the local news. 'She started getting really excited. She told me what kind of dress she wanted and what she was looking for and her vision of the day, and I was able to go to the local businesses and say what she wanted,' she added. Local businesses chipped in and donated Lee's dress, decorations, flowers and food for the reception. She was married on Tuesday at the chapel by University Hospital Chaplain Rev. Tara Reck. Too weak too walk, she was wheeled down the aisle and though it hurts too much to wear her wedding ring, she proudly had it hanging on a chain around her neck. 'Our hospital chapel was standing room only, and the crowd spilled out into the hall. When Don planted his kiss on Evonne, it was among the most beautiful moments I’ve ever seen,' Nurse Pritchett said. Beaming: Though Evonne received news that her leukemia is terminal, nothing could steal her joy at marrying her true love Lee's adult daughter, Celeste, was even able to fly in from Japan, where she lives, to experience the event. The staff transformed her hospital room into a reception hall and guests came in to enjoy a treat and give their wishes to the newlyweds. 'While parting may come sooner for them than most couples, I know their love will endure. It’s inspired me and so many others. I’m honored to be part of their family, and proud they are part of mine,' Nurse Pritchett wrote in a statement about the couple
