Police in India have launched a investigation after a young British woman was found dead in a houseboat in the northern state of Kashmir.
Reports said she had been stabbed to death and that a Dutch man had been detained by police.
A spokesman for the British High Commission in Delhi confirmed to The Independent that they were following up reports. "We can confirm that a British woman has been found dead. Her next of kin have been informed. We are waiting for further details," he said.
Indian media said the woman, said to be aged 24 was found inside the boat this morning on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It was reported that a Dutch man aged in his mid-40s was detained by police and was being questioned about the incident.
Ghani Mir, the Inspector General of Kashmir police, told the NDTV news channel: "The Dutch national had fled from the houseboat in the night, leaving behind his belongings.
"He was trying to flee from the Kashmir valley, carrying only his passport. We flashed an alert for his arrest."
The young woman had been staying on the houseboat for two months, the owner told the television station, adding that she had been "like her daughter".
